What is a Capsule Wardrobe? I found myself asking this exact question last month when I heard this phrase 3 times from 3 different people in one week. I figured it was worth researching. Turns out, a Capsule Wardrobe is when you condense your wardrobe (clothing, accessories, and shoes) to 40 pieces or less. I was immediately on board! I had been feeling 'blah' about my closet for months. It was full of items that didn't fit (and probably never will again), items I never ever wore, and items I was wearing almost 8 years ago. With school starting in just a week, I want to be able to grab anything out of my closet and know it's going to fit and look good.
Step One: Get Organized
You want to start the process by sorting everything into 3 piles: pieces to donate, pieces to save, and pieces you love and want to keep. This includes all shoes, clothing, and jewelry. The exception is "special occasion outfits", those can be set aside!
It's important to look at your items objectively. When was the last time you wore it? Does it fit? Does it have sentimental value? Is it something you can wear for all occasions or only special occasions?
A white tutu is acceptable for all occasions.....right?
Step Two: Ask a Friend for Help
Sometimes two sets of eyes are better than one. However, I don't recommend recruiting your cat. I could feel Calvin's judging eyes on me when I tried to convince him clogs were still in style and that I DO look good in paisley.
Step 3: Remember to Take A Breaks
Going through years of clothing can be overwhelming. You'll probably have to sort again after your initial sort. Only keep the pieces that 1) you truly love 2) that fit (not will fit or could fit sometime in the near or distant future). Remember, the goal is to get under the number 40, that includes clothing, shoes and accessories.
Ok, so I didn't get my number under 40. It was really hard!! But what I do have is a closet full of clothes that fit and that I love. So I'd say thats a win!
How many of you are willing to minimize your closet to under 40 pieces?!
