Home Makeover

For those who don't know, BJ and I bought our very first home this fall. It was a fun and scary experience that happened in a whirlwind. The house is over 100 years old, so it has a lot of character including what we can only imagine was a parlor room at one time. When we moved in, we wondered what in the world we were going to do with what appeared to be a second living room. After some paint and new furniture it quickly became my favorite room in the house.

Here's a photo of how the room looked when the previous owners lived here.

The room was a brownish tan color with the ceiling painted a shade lighter than the walls.

I wanted the overall feel of the room to be lighter, so I went with a light gray wall color and painted the ceiling white. We also painted the radiator white using a high heat enamel spray paint.

I went with a neutral color palate with pops of emerald green. Calvin decided to be apart of some of the pictures. He's such a ham.

My favorite piece is this old banana crate I found at an antique mall. It's the perfect place to keep all of our blankets!

We found our couch at Home Makers in Des Moines. If you have never been there, it's well worth the trip. They carry high quality furniture for fantastic prices. I was a little afraid to buy a white couch with 3 animals, but it's made of some sort of magic material that seems to repel dog hair. That and we have trained them to stay away from the white couch.

I made the curtains myself out of a emerald green taffeta. My mom had bronze taffeta curtains in our dining room growing up that I always loved. They were simple to make. I hemmed the edges and held them back using some giant metal knobs I found at Hobby Lobby.

The pictures on our mantel have an interesting story. My aunt posted a photo of her antique booth. In the picture were these paintings. I realized my grandma, on the other side of my family, had those exact paintings in her house when I was a child. What are the chances? My aunt was nice enough to let me have them!

Another favorite piece was this painting BJ and I found at a flea market! We both saw it and instantly loved it!

This chair, believe it or not, was found on the side of the road. I reupholstered it and will be writing a blog about it very soon!

I use these cute baskets I found at Hobby Lobby to store gloves and scarves by the front door. It is Iowa, after all.

Last but not least, I love the tiny windows above our front door. They add extra light to this room so it always has a bright feeling!

Keep checking back to see more rooms in our new home! I have had a blast painting and decorating and hope you all enjoy seeing the progress!
